Brazilian films at Hot Docs 2017

Hot Docs presents two Brazilian docs this year: State of Exception, by Jason O´Hara, in a world premiere here in Toronto, and Divine Divas, by Leandra Leal, in a Canadian premiere.

Divine Divas (Divinas Divas)

By Leandra Leal

110 MINUTES | 2016 | BRAZIL | BRAZILIAN PORTUGUESE (SUBTITLES) | Canadian premiere | RATING: PG

With her directorial debut, Leandra Leal turns her camera on the famed Brazilian cabaret troupe Divinas Divas, which ran for several years in the Rival theatre run by her grandfather. As a child, Leal grew up surrounded by the Rogéria, Jane Di Castro, Divina Valéria, Camille K, Fujika de Halliday, Eloína dos Leopardos, Marquesa and Brigitte Búzios—the iconic performers of the cabaret who were the first generation of transvestite performers in Brazil. These revolutionary artists fearlessly challenged the morals of a country at the height of its rigid military dictatorship in the 1960s. Now, 50 years later, the divas prepare to remount their legendary cabaret. Through extraordinary archival footage and dramatically stunning cinematography, Leal captures their long careers on stage and their struggles for human rights and individual freedoms. Heather Haynes

State of Exception

By Jason O´Hara

88 MINUTES | 2017 | CANADA BRAZIL | PORTUGUESE (SUBTITLES) | WORLD PREMIERE | RATING: PG

As Rio de Janeiro prepares to host the 2014 FIFA World Cup and 2016 Olympics, a community of self-described “urban Indians” are threatened with forced eviction to make way for a stadium named after the original indigenous inhabitants of the territory. As the mega-events begin threatening a number of other communities with displacement, residents unite to fight back in defense of their constitutional rights, temporarily suspended under a “state of exception”. This character driven story was filmed over the course of 6 years, utilizing production protocols that combine observational verité with participatory documentary practices and citizen journalism.
