Hostels: Where to Stay in Rio de Janeiro

All eyes will be on Rio de Janeiro as it hosts the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games. According to the website “Brazil 2016”, official website of the Federal Government for the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games, between 300,000 and 500,000 visitors from abroad are expected before, during and after the sporting event.

Finding accommodations in this wonderful city may be turn out to be a challenging and expensive task. Staying at a hostel may be an excellent option for those with limited budgets, but who also seek the socialization aspects of boarding with other guests.

But don’t wait until the last minute! Carla Lee Barnett, Assistant Director of ACCARJ (Bed and Breakfast and Hotel Association of Rio de Janeiro), warns that a survey conducted by the Association at the end of May revealed that 95.7% of the hostels were booked.

Another survey conducted in February of 2015 by ACCARJ in partnership with SEBRAE, revealed that most tourists who stay in hostels are relatively young and have post-secondary education. The results showed that 33.3% of respondents were between the ages of 18 and 24; 55.6% of the guests had post-secondary education; and 40.2% had completed secondary school.

You can rent bikes on site. The Sugarloaf Mountain and the Christ the Redeemer statue are approximately a 20-minute drive. The staff speaks Portuguese, Spanish and English.

It is categorized as a “Comfort Hostel”, and has shared rooms with individual lockers (visitors should bring their own padlocks), reading lamps and individual electrical outlets. The shared bathrooms are separate, male and female. Gaia also offers private suites with private bathrooms, closets, hair dryer and cable TV. Other attractive features include: 24-hour reception, free Wi-Fi, a computer with internet access, a laundry, a kitchen, a reading lounge, a large breakfast area, a solarium, a luggage locker, tourist information and accessibility.

This hostel was a former residence of the famous Brazilian musician Tom Jobim and is located in the heart of Ipanema, 300 meters from the beach. The site has an outdoor swimming pool and a deck where guests can cool off. The hostel is close to the Ipanema subway station and 9 km from Santos Dumont Airport.

The friendliness of the owners is often remarked upon by guests who have posted their opinions on the Expedia website. The Sante hostel is close to the famous Selaron Steps, the Lapa Arches (one of the famous postcards of Rio de Janeiro), the beautiful Municipal Theatre and the Municipal Chamber of Rio de Janeiro.
